At our church we do not water baptize infants since the Bible does not record this practice. The Bible shows us that those who were baptized were people who had personally acknowledged their belief in Jesus as the Son of God and had committed themselves to organize their life around the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
The custom of infant baptism began after the Bible (the Canon of Scripture) was written. The ceremony of infant baptism is intended to emphasize the faith commitment of parents on behalf of the child. Parents make a solemn vow to raise their child in Christian faith until the child is old enough to confirm his/her faith personally.
In principle (and from examples in the Bible), this is what “baby dedications” are all about. Rather than baptizing an infant based on parents’ faith, we dedicate infants to the Lord as the expression of parents’ faith. In other words, we encourage parents to ensure that their child is old enough to understand and appreciate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ before they are water baptized.
